Standard 1.5 - Ethics
"Candidates demonstrate the contemporary professional ethics of the field as defined and developed by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology" (AECT, 2012).
Description of Artifact
This artifact is a presentation that was created using Microsoft PowerPoint during Dr. Rose-Mary Mautino’s course GDIT 712: Ethics and Social Justice in the Digital Age, taken during the 2018 summer semester. I worked with a partner to create this presentation which was phase one of the Inquiry as a Methodology Model for Online Instruction (Mautino & Henderson, 2013). My partner and I first conducted our research to find out which professional ethics standards apply to us as instructional technologists. Then, we created this presentation to inform our peers about our findings. Once we had covered the standards, we facilitated a class discussion applying AECT’s ethics standards to the topic of grading.
Reflection and Rationale
Conducting the background research required for this assignment helped locate and understand the ethics standards put forward by the Association of Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) and the European Code of Professional Ethics in ICT (CEPIS). I found it was very useful that AECT described various scenarios to explain each ethics standard further which I was able to use when we presented to our peers. Discussing the implementation of the standards with my peers forced me to think about how I would integrate this code of ethics into my work. Since this discussion I have been able to create learning materials and environments with more awareness about ethical practices. For example, in all the learning materials I create for my teaching I make sure I follow the Copyright and Fair Use laws, provide equal access to the technological resources for all my students, and teach them how to safely use technology. Thus, I believe that this artifact shows my proficiency in AECT’s Standard 1.5.
