Standard 3.4 - Managing

"Candidates establish mechanisms for maintaining the technology infrastructure to improve learning and performance." (AECT, 2012)

Description of Artifact

The artifact I chose to demonstrate proficiency in AECT’s Standard 3.4 was created during the summer 2018 semester in Dr. David Carbonara’s course titled Professional Leadership in Technology. For this project we were required to create a strategic plan for the implementation of instructional technology in a school of our choice. In order to complete this project, I was required to develop a vision, mission, and goals of the integration plan taking into account the school’s demographics. I decided to use the school I am currently teaching in; Hillel Academy of Pittsburgh, as my example.

Reflection and Rationale

Creating this plan allowed me to consider the factors that affect technology integration on a larger scale rather than simply in my classroom, thereby “establish[ing] the mechanisms for maintaining the technology infrastructure to improve learning and performance” as stated in AECT’s Standard 3.5. The knowledge I gained from this project allowed me to write a proposal requesting more professional development for the science teachers in technology integration, and funding for devices to be used in the science lab at the school that I currently work at.

Before taking this course, I believed that the main hindrance to the integration of technology in a classroom was the lack of funding. However, this course with Dr. Carbonara has shown me that professional development of both teachers and administrators also plays a vital role in technology integration. This, in turn, sparked my dissertation research topic in sustainable professional development in technology integration for science teachers.
