Standard 5.2 - Method
"Candidates apply research methodologies to solve problems and enhance practice." (AECT, 2012)
Description of Artifact
This artifact is a paper my cohort and I presented at the E-Learn conference hosted by the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE) held in Las Vegas, Nevada in October 2018. This paper looks at how a first-year doctoral cohort formed a Community of Practice (COP) using Slack: an online communication tool, to form a scholarly community (Lave & Wenger, 1999).
Reflection and Rationale

A year into the doctoral program, my cohort and I realized that we had several courses in which quantitative research methodologies were discussed, and very few about qualitative methodologies. Therefore, we decided to conduct this study, with the help of Dr. Jason Ritter and Dr. Sandra Quiñones, to practice using the self-study and qualitative research methods. Coming from a science background that uses a lot of quantitative data analysis methods, it was a challenge to start thinking about data analysis qualitatively. I believe that while this paper demonstrates my ability to “apply research methodologies to solve problems and enhance practice” as stated in Standard 5.2, I still have much more to learn in terms of qualitative research methodologies. Thus, in the Spring 2020 semester, I hope to take the advance qualitative research course at Duquesne University.
