Standard 3.2 - Using

"Candidates make professionally sound decisions in selecting appropriate processes and resources to provide optimal conditions for learning based on principles, theories, and effective practices." (AECT, 2012)

Description of First Artifact

For the second indicator of AECT’s third standard I chose two artifacts that demonstrate my proficiency. The first artifact is a video I created in Dr. Heo’s GILT 521: Digital Imagery for Teachers course, during the fall 2018 semester. For this assignment we were tasked with creating a video lesson we could use in a flipped classroom setting on content of our choice. The video had to contain learning objectives, formative assessments, attention focusing techniques, audio narration, and support learner control. We were then required to write a rationale describing the features we included in the video and explain how they help the learner or improve learning.

Reflection and Rationale of First Artifact

In order to create this screen-cast video I used the Camtasia software. Initially I tried to use Microsoft PowerPoint, but I quickly realized that it would not work for my purposes prompting me to use Camtasia.  In this video I walk the audience through the process of writing a lab report. The video was created with the intention of it being a supplemental learning resource for my high school science students. As required by the objectives of the assignment, I incorporated several of the multimedia principles (Meyer, 2014) I had learned in this program. Furthermore, the last objective of the assignment was to write a rationale to justify how the video helps the learner or improves learning. This forced me to analyze each step I took in making the video. Many of my students, especially those who have trouble keeping up with lessons, stated this video was especially useful to them.

The Using Indicator of AECT’s third standard states that “candidates [should] make professionally sound decisions in selecting appropriate processes and resources to provide optimal conditions for learning based on principles, theories, and effective practices.“ I was able to use the multimedia principles and learning theories to create this video. Furthermore, by creating this learning resource that is accessible by all students, I was able differentiate my lesson and create an optimal learning environment for all my students.

Artifact 2 - Presentation created using Nearpod

Description of Second Artifact

The second artifact is an interactive presentation created using Nearpod. I used this to supplement a unit I taught my tenth-grade chemistry students during the spring 2019 semester. I had been introduced to Nearpod in both Dr. David Carbonara’s and Dr. Misook Heo’s classes, and then at the AACE E-Learn Conference which I attended in October 2018.

Reflection and Rationale of Second Artifact

What I appreciate about Nearpod is that it allows me to build collaboration activities and formative assessments into the presentation making my lessons more engaging for the students. Previously, I used Google Slides and I found myself asking the students to “take out a piece of paper” and then share what they wrote with the class. By using Nearpod I could ask my students to enter their answers onto the screen itself, making it easier to share their ideas and hold a more smoother class discussion. According to the Using Indicator of AECT’s third standard, “Candidates make professionally sound decisions in selecting appropriate processes and resources to provide optimal conditions for learning based on principles, theories, and effective practices.” This artifact further indicates my proficiency as I was able to choose a process that helped me create an optimal learning environment in my chemistry classroom.
