Standard 3.5 - Ethics

"Candidates foster a learning environment in which ethics guide practice that promotes health, safety, best practice and respect for copyright, Fair Use, and appropriate open access to resources." (AECT, 2012)

Description of Artifact

This word document was created for Dr Heo’s GILT 521: Digital Imagery for Teachers, course which I took during the fall 2018 semester. That week we had learned about the Intellectual Property Clause, Copyright and Fair Use Act, Educational Fair Use, and the TEACH ACT. Then we were introduced to several resources such as the Creative Commons, Public Domains, and the Open Education Resources that teachers can use to find materials for their classrooms. Therefore, to demonstrate our understanding we were required to find two images on the same topic; one protected by copyright law, and one from Creative Commons, and then explain which images could be used in a setting of our choice.

Reflection and Rationale

For this project I chose two images that represent the equipment used in a chemistry lab and explained why I planned on using one of the images as the background of my chemistry class website. This assignment taught me to always be aware of the resources I use in my teaching and as a result I started to reference all my materials used in my teaching. Furthermore, this course provided the guidance on how to teach my students about the ethics of conducting good research and the Copyright and Fair Use laws. As I result, I believe that this artifact demonstrates my knowledge about and proficiency in AECT’s Standard 3.5 which states that “candidates foster a learning environment in which ethics guide practice that promotes health, safety, best practice and respect for copyright, Fair Use, and appropriate open access to resources. “
