About Me
Hello! My name is Mihiri (Mia) Meepegama. I am a doctoral student in the Instructional Technology doctoral program at Duquesne University. While going to school for my own professional growth, I also teach high school science in a private school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
I was born and raised in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where I began my career as a teacher once I graduated with my bachelors degree from Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio. In Sri Lanka I taught science to students in grades six through eleven for two years. While I loved teaching, I realized that I had no pre-service training nor any professional development in being a good educator, so I decided to come back to USA to follow a masters program in secondary school science education.

As I gain the content, pedagogical, and procedural knowledge of being an educator, the more I strive to help spread this knowledge to other teachers. Therefore my professional goal is to become a teacher educator to help pre- and in-service teachers become better at what they do. Furthermore, I hope to continue researching ways to improve professional development for teachers, especially those who teach in low-income areas.

I have been teaching science to secondary school students for over 5 years. Holding a teaching position while participating in this doctoral program has allowed me to practice applying the many concepts and theories related to learning and instructional technology.

This program has helped me prepare as a scholar practitioner who is able to practically apply the research based scholarly knowledge learned during these part two years. in this picture I am presenting a research paper at the World Conference on E-Learning hosted by AACE in October of 2018. This paper was co-authored by 6 other members of my cohort.
