Standard 4.2 - Leadership

"Candidates lead their peers in designing and implementing technology-supported learning." (AECT, 2012)

Description of Artifact

The artifact chosen to demonstrate proficiency in AECT’s Standard 4.2 is a paper I wrote for Dr. David Carbonara’s GDIT 701: Professional Leadership in Technology, course taken during the summer semester of 2018. The task for the assignment was to create a Microsoft Word document imagining I was a leader at an institution who wanted to add computation thinking and robotics to the curriculum. The paper had to expand on the following: (1) what the mission of the institution is; (2) how you will create a shared vision for your initiative; (3) what is that shared vision; (4) describe your leadership style.

Reflection and Rationale

I chose to use the high school I am currently working in as the institution where this new proposed curriculum would be implemented. First I developed a vision for the new program, and then described how I would lead my peers in the integration of robotics and computational thinking into all the science classes in the high school. Guided by Ertmer’s (1999) work I was able to identify some of the reasons why teachers in my school are hesitant to use technology, and so created programs within the integration plan to address these reasons and facilitate smoother implementation. The assignment also required that I think about what type of leader I would want to be in my professional career and provide reasons why I chose the specific style. I chose to be a leader of the Academy Style; someone who helps “apprentices” become masters of their trade by providing the required training and opportunities (Sonnenfeld, Peoperl, & Kotter, 1998).  Having completed this paper, I am aware of how to be a good leader, and now apply the Academy style of leadership to help novice teachers I encounter at my work. Hence, I believe that this artifact clearly demonstrates my proficiency in AECT’s Standard 4.2 which states that “Candidates [should] lead their peers in designing and implementing technology-supported learning.”
