Standard 2.1 - Creating
"Candidates apply content pedagogy to create appropriate applications of processes and technologies to improve learning and performance outcomes." (AECT, 2012)
Description of Artifact
The artifact chosen to demonstrate proficiency in AECT’s Standard 2.1 is a learning module I created in Dr. Misook Heo’s GDIT 705: Cognition and Instructional Design, course taken during the fall 2017 semester. The objective of this project was to create a lesson module, on a topic of our choice, that students could use outside of traditional class time. The module had to cover a total of two to three hours of learning material. I first created a lesson plan outlining the objectives, student tasks, and assessments of the unit, and then designed a Google Site that would house the learning module. The main objective of this assignment was to use the various multimedia principles discussed in Richard Mayer’s 2014 book; The Cambridge handbook in multimedia learning. Once the learning module had been created, we were required to write a rationale to justify how we used the various principles.
Reflection and Rationale

The learning module I created was designed to be used by high school science students to learn how to read scientific journal articles. First, the objectives of the module, the assessments, and the instructional strategies were planned, then the technology that would be used to house this module was created. This meant that I had to think about my goals for the module and my learners to construct an application they can use easily. Initially I thought of using EdPuzzle for this purpose but soon found out that it was not suitable for my requirements, so I chose to use Google Sites instead. The intent was to be able to link the site to our existing class page so students could easily access the page when needed. If EdPuzzle was used, students would have had to create an account and remember the password to access the materials each time.

This course with Dr. Heo made me aware of how the human brain processes information and brought my attention to the various multimedia principles. Writing the rationale for this learning module, justifying why I created the learning module by incorporating the principles, helped me reflect as a practitioner on which methods would work best for my students. Since this course each learning material I have created for my work; both as a teacher and in my position as a Graduate Assistant for the Center for Global Engagement at Duquesne, was based on these multimedia principles. Therefore, I believe that this artifact reflects my proficiency in AECT’s Standard 2.1 which states that “candidates [should be able to] apply content pedagogy to create appropriate applications of processes and technologies to improve learning and performance outcomes.”
